IP Blocked for Security Reasons

On our servers, multiple security measures are in place that may cause an IP address to be blocked when suspicious activity or repeated failed connection attempts are detected.

What can cause an IP to be blocked?

The behavior of an IP can cause it to be blocked. Some typical examples that may lead to blocking are:

  • Failed login attempts to your email (incoming or outgoing), either due to incorrect username or incorrect password, or due to other incorrect settings
  • Failed login attempts to your FTP
  • Failed login attempts to SSH (for accounts that have SSH access).

How will you know that your IP has been blocked?

If your IP is blocked:

  • Your website will not load in the browser only from that specific connection/device.
  • You will not be able to receive and send email, if you use our server for email.

Also, in this case, the following may appear in your browser:

How to confirm it?

To verify that it is indeed a block of your IP and not a server malfunction, you can:

  • Try to visit your site from another connection (e.g., from your mobile phone using mobile data, not WiFi).
  • Use a tool such as https://downforeveryoneorjustme.com/, where by entering your website address, it will tell you that it is working normally and is accessible to other users.

How long does a block last?

The duration of the block varies depending on what caused it, and in general the block can be:

  • Temporary, lasting from 1 to 12 hours.
  • Permanent.

What to do if your IP has been blocked by mistake?

  • If you have a dynamic IP, then usually it is enough to:
    • turn off your router for 10-15 seconds, and
    • turn it back on, so you get a new IP, which will not be blocked.
  • If you have a static IP, then:
  • If the block concerns connection via mobile or tablet (3G, 4G, 5G), then:
    • you can try to enable “Airplane mode” for 10-20 seconds, and
    • disable it, so it finds the network again and you get a new IP.

What else can cause an IP to be blocked?

Apart from the reasons already mentioned above, there are several other reasons why an IP address may be blocked. Indicatively, the server may block IPs that:

  • have been placed on “blacklists” for abuse reasons (e.g., sending bulk spam emails),
  • have attempted to perform a port scan on the server,
  • have shown too many connections to unexpected ports within a short period of time,
  • have made repeated requests to closed ports of the server,
  • have made general attack attempts on the server, etc.
