How to change my password on a dedicated server without a control panel
For security reasons, we recommend that you change the password on your account periodically. In fact, our security policy requires you to change your password at regular intervals.
You change your password after connecting to your dedicated server via SSH, using the passwd command.
What you will need:
- SSH connection details: you can find these in your “Welcome Kit”
- Your current password
- 2FA Hardware OTP Generator: the hardware one-time password (PIN) generator for 2-Factor Authentication
Password change instructions
- Connect to your server via SSH. You can refer to our related article, where you will also find the recommended SSH applications for each operating system: First Connection via SSH for dedicated servers
- Once connected, run the command:
passwd
- You will be asked, in order, for:
![]()
Current password:the password you currently use
New password:the new password you want to set
Retype new password:the new password again, for confirmation
While typing, nothing appears on the screen, not even asterisks. This is done for security and is normal. - If everything goes well, you will see the message:
passwd: all authentication tokens updated successfully.
The password change process is now complete, and the new password takes effect immediately for SSH and SFTP.
