Email Transfer from Third-Party Provider with IMAPSync DirectAdmin
When transferring an email account from another provider, it is often useful (especially in the case of IMAP access to emails) to retain all email messages (mailbox contents). For this purpose, we use the IMAPSync migration feature, which is provided within your DirectAdmin hosting panel.
IMAPSync allows the transfer of emails between two servers with only the email password on the old server and the hostname of the old email server required. Additionally, it provides the ability, each time it is run as a tool, to bring only the changes, and not all messages from the beginning.
Email Transfer Process with IMAPSync
To complete the IMAPSync process, you will need the following information from the old email server:
- The hostname or IP address of the old email server
- The email address of the account
- The account password
1. Logging into DirectAdmin
Type domainname.tld:2222 in your browser (replace domainname.tld with your own domain) and log in using your username and password.
2. Creating a New Email Account
- From the E-mail Manager menu, select E-mail Accounts
- Click the “+CREATE ACCOUNT” button
- Fill in the required information for the new account
Note: You can use the same password that the account had on the old server (for user convenience) or create a new password that is automatically generated and is more secure.
3. Accessing IMAPSync Migrations
After the new email account is successfully created:
- Select IMAPSync Migrations from the E-mail Manager menu
- Click the “IMPORT E-MAILS” button
4. Configuring Synchronization Parameters
In the Source section:
Fill in the details of the old email server from which you want to transfer the emails:
- Host: The address of the old mail server
- User: The full email address (e.g., info@domain.com)
- Password: The account password
Attention: Make sure there are no spaces before or after the information you enter.
In the Destination section:
In the User field, select the new email account to which the messages will be transferred.
When you have completed filling in the information, click the “Start Migration” button.
5. Monitoring the Process
Immediately after starting, you will automatically return to the IMAPSync Migrations page, where you can monitor the synchronization progress in real-time through a progress bar.
When the progress bar disappears, the email synchronization has been successfully completed and all messages have been transferred to the new account.
Important Notes:
- The duration of the synchronization depends on the volume of emails being transferred
- In case of error, check the connection details again and try again, otherwise contact us
- Each time the same migration is run, it does not start from the beginning, but only synchronizes what has changed (e.g., brings only new messages and deletes on the new server everything that has been deleted from the old server). This is very useful when you have large mailboxes to transfer.
